A traditional dance and music group from Rawamangun high school in Jakarta won three awards at the 16th International Iskele Municipality Folk Dance Festival in North Cyprus.
The group of 28 students from Indonesia won second place at the festival in addition to the best music award.
The group’s leader, Leo Mokodompit from IOV Youth Section Indonesia, said in a release received by The Jakarta Post on Monday that the group performed seven traditional dances: a Saman dance from Aceh; a Betawi Kembang Aprok dance; a Pagelu dance from Toraja; South Sulawesi; an Alar-alar dance from Kalimantan; an Indang Badantak dance from Minangkabau, West Sumatra; a Balinese dance and a Yosim Pancar dance from Papua.
The festival, held from June 29 to July 5 in Iskele, North Cyprus, was featured various countries such as Mexico, Turkey, Russia, Palestine and South Korea.
“They had intensive practices for four months and this was their greatest achievement,” said Susan Susiana and Rinawati, two teachers who accompanied the students.
The group will attend another international folk art festival in Naoussa, Greece, from July 6 to July 12.
